"In the West, pragmatism tends to have the dismal reputation of being humdrum and tied to status quo politics. But this book is anything but humdrum. It injects into the topic a welcome, uplifting elan by showing its connection with idealism, spirituality and religious faith. I think Dewey would have been pleased." --Fred Dallmayr, Emeritus Faculty, University of Notre Dame, USA "One of the hardest things to do in the world today is to reach out to multiple communities and perspectives whose voices are disparate and seemingly irreconcilable. This book has taken us on this hard journey here with attention to the practical yet spiritual aspects of the search for freedom and solidarity." --David Blake Willis, Professor of anthropology and education, Fielding Graduate University, USA "This rich collection of essays reminds us that genuine spirituality bears cultural and social fruits. The book invites one to consider thought-provoking ways of articulating spiritual life with the common good in our world of confusion and conflicts." --Patrick Laude, Professor, Georgetown University, Doha, Qatar This book explores the dynamics of interaction between pragmatism and spirituality in the constitution and working of consciousness, freedom and solidarity. What is God? What does it mean to believe in God? What happens to God after the death of God? This book examines "the death of God" from a philosophical standpoint. It focuses on monotheism, polytheism, and nature, and it discusses the renewed importance of spirituality-and the "spiritual but not religious"-in response to the death of God. In recent years, religious belief has been in decline, but secularism cannot satisfy our spiritual needs. We are now living in a "post-secular" age in which the relationship between philosophy, spirituality, and religion must be re-examined. As an exploratory essay, this book engages the reader at a profound level, and considers a variety of modern thinkers, including Nietzsche, Hegel, Freud, Levinas, Assmann, and Buber. It offers a sustained meditation on the origin of God, the death of God, and the future of "God" as a guiding ideal. .

This book calls for an expanded vision of holistic education that emphasizes togetherness and harmony through the discovery of oneself, others, and the larger society. It brings together teachers' voices, experiences, and practices for such an education with Southern Knowledge, philosophy and ideologies proposed by Indian philosophers and spiritual leaders like Aurobindo, the Dalai Lama, Gandhi, Krishnamurti, and Tagore. The book reconceptualizes and extends UNESCO's "Learning To Live Together" to emphasize "Learning to Live Together Harmoniously" (LTLTH) and develops a novel conceptual framework for it. The book also explores how LTLTH can be translated into practice; calling for a continuum of harmonious lived experiences created through experiential and project based pedagogy, systems and processes for autonomy and autonomous behaviour regulation, empathetic teacher student relations, schoolwide ethos of harmonious living, and teachers' ways of living and being. Jwalin Patel is the President and Co-Founder of the Together in Development and Education (TIDE) Foundation in India. This book is based on the research he conducted during his PhD and postdoctoral studies at the University of Cambridge in the UK, the experiences of teachers from holistic schools in India, and the grassroots interventions carried out by the TIDE Foundation.
